Plants and animals are classified in two groups or kingdoms, the Animal kingdom and the Plant kingdom. Most plants have the ability to manufacture their own foos from air, water, and minerals in the soil, and they get their power to do this from the sun.

Animals can not manufacture their basic food. They eat plants, or other animals that feed on plants. Most animals can move about too. so it is relatively easy to tell plants from animals, until you come to the very tiny, one celled creatures such as bacteria. Some scientists think that these creatures should form a third kingdom, that of the protists.

There are about one million kinds of animals, ranging from the giant Blue whale to the microscopic protozoans. The insects form the largest group. Scientists have so far identified about 700,000 different kinds. Mammals, the group that includes dogs, cats, horses and Man, total around 4,000 species. Other species totals include birds: 11,000; reptiles: 5,000; fishes: 13,000; amphibians: 3,000; centipedes: 2,000 and millipedes: 8,000. Arachnids, the spiders and their allies total up an amazing 35,000 species.
